Playstation to Evolve in 2005?

According to an article distributed by Reuters News Service, Sony executives are speculating on the possibility that the Playstation 3 may be available in 2005 and may be much more, or less, than a standard video game console. According to the article, Sony is evolving the Playstation by focusing not on the system itself, but on the processor chip that runs the system- considering ways of expanding its capabilities and its compatibility with other home electronics and computer systems instead of limiting it to existing inside a plastic Playstation shell.
