|Production I.G has formally revealed its development of Ghost in the Shell: Arise, a new anime adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s modern classic cyberpunk manga. Tow Ubukata (Chevalier, Mardock Scramble) is writing the new anime which veteran animator Kazuchika Kise (animation director of Blood: The Last Vampire, Sakura Taisen movie) will direct.

That Kusinagi design does not look good at all. She looks more like Generic Stoic Action Girl #36. If it hadn’t been pointed out this was a GitS title, I would never have known. Ugh.
I’m curious about seeing long-time I.G. animator Kise in the director’s chair at least. I’m hoping that his vision diverges significantly from Kamiyama’s GitS:SAC.
And yeah, once again the character design is pretty dumb… not really sure what it communicates, other than making Motoko look unprofessional.
The only time it made sense was in the first film, where the design fit with its transhumanist theme. Motoko had a fully artificial supermodel body, but then she saw everyone else with the same body in a world where bodies & brains were interchangeable. She obviously viewed her body as a disposable, commoditized tool separate from herself.
I can live with a drastic change in the character design for the same reasons listed above. My issue is the lack of faith I have in the selected staff. Kazuchika Kise two listed works are terrible. Blood with the strange juxtaposition of 3D when not needed was distracting, badly implemented, and added nothing to the anime. And Sakura Taisen is so painful average I care not to discuss it.
The writer seems to have potential. Mardock Scramble seems to have a similar theme so he has experience with the Cyberpunk design.
I am getting really mixed feelings about this.
