Robotech News

Harmony Gold held their Robotech panel at the San Diego Comic Con and revealed some big news. Concerning the release of Robotech by ADV, the DVD will have a second audio channel with a commentary track from the original creative team.

A clip from the developmental Robotech 3000 was shown at the panel, featuring some new characters rendered in 3D glory by Netter Digital Media. Recognizing that fans consider Robotech an anime series, Harmony Gold has scrapped the notion of a CGI Robotech 3000 and gone back to Japan, contacting some of the original producers of the Japanese animation and asking them to come up with some design ideas. This is in a preliminary stage though. The panel was only shown three or four fully colored concept sketches, but no actual animation. Carl Macek will be heading the project, which will feature a story 700 or 800 years after the last Robotech series. As can be inferred the series is a long way away.

Concerning the Mattel game license of Robotech, a representative from Mattel talked about its plans, starting with the never-released Nintendo 64 game, Crystal Dreams. According to Mattel, this game looks too dated to bring to market and the development team has long since scattered, making its revival very unlikely. Instead, look for Mattel to hire a development team to develop Robotech games for next generation console systems (specifically mentioned were X-Box and Dolphin) as well as the PC.
