Sega on Playstation 2

Amidst rumors of the impending demise of the Dreamcast hardware and Sega’s confirmation of their intentions to focus on creating games, Sega of Japan has officially announced that Virtua Fighter 4, along with Space Channel 5, two sports team manager simulation games and “unspecified games from the Sakura Taisen strategy/RPG series,” will be coming to the Playstation 2. Most surprising is the confirmation that home version of Virtua Fighter 4 will be a PS2 exclusive. The arcade version, though, will run on Sega’s Naomi 2 arcade hardware. Sega of America also confirmed that Acclaim will be publishing several Sega hits on the PS2 in the US, including Crazy Taxi, 18 Wheeler American Pro Trucker (which does not yet have an American console release at all) and Zombie Revenge. Sega of America also is reported to be planning to port several classic Saturn games to the PSOne.

Sega has confirmed that 2001 will be the last year that they produce the Dreamcast console. The company will continue to “support the hardware” until December 31st, but as of March 31st, Sega will no longer keep a supply of Dreamcast units in their inventory. Sega will continue to support the system, though, with new games including Bomberman Online, Crazy Taxi 2, Jet Grind Radio 2, Space Channel Five 2, OutTrigger, Confidential Mission, and Shenmue 2.

The Dreamcast console will drop from $149 retail to a suggested retail of $99.95 beginning February 4th.
