It took them awhile, but Section23 is starting to get a few more interesting titles in their catalogue. And yet, they keep flooding the market with titles as if to make up for lost time.
Without a dub, I may pass on these. I’m just curious how anime DVDs are selling without dubs? Are they selling less, more, or just as well? Hey John, can you shed some light on that question?
I haven’t seen those first two series, but it’s about time somebody aquired Jigoku Shoujo Futakomori. Although, I would liked to have seen FUNimation get that one since they already have the first series.
There has to be some viablity to sub-only or Sentai wouldn’t have bothered to rise out of ADV’s ashes. If I remember correctly, dubbing contributes to at least a third of the production cost (don’t quote me on that), so it’s a significant savings. You also have to figure Sentai has trimmed the cost on the packaging, with a dual-disc case and two DVDs verses 3-4 DVDs with individual cases. Plus the extras have been trimmed down a bit, so less reseach and production. Considering they were selling DVDs for $30 each ten years ago, $25-$35 per collection is a good deal.
Not bothered by the sub-only myself. I’d rather save the money than pay for a horrendious ADV-style dub (a lot of you dub supporters have to admit ADV had some rancid dubs to their name) I’ll just switch off after the first line of dialog. I do watch dubs when they’re well-performed and true to the source material, so I can’t say I won’t miss them altogether.
These guys have been on fire lately with their license acquisitions! First, two of my favorites, Hidamari Sketch and Maria+Holic, now Asu no Yoichi.
I think the lack of sub is, as mentioned, to cut costs; and I’d guess the audience they are aiming to sell at are those who probably watch fansubs, AKA people who wouldn’t be too bothered by the lack of a dub track.
