Shane Black to Direct Death Note
|Warner Bros. has signed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang writer/director Shane Black to direct its live action Death Note adaptation of the popular manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry, who are collaborating with Black on a new Doc Savage feature, will write the Death Note screenplay.
This may be great news. Black has a lengthy history of writing exceptional action movies, and his singular feature directing credit, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is fantastic. However, Kiss Kiss and action films like Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout are stylistically drastically different from Death Note. So viewers will just have to wait and hope that Black is just as competent with the suspense drama genre that he’s never worked in before.

Well, LW and Last Boy Scout are at least the same in tone as DN. But DN will inevitably be PG-13, and therein lies his *real* weakness-successfully producing and selling general audience tentpole entertainment. I liked Monster Squad, but it’s not all that nostalgic hipsters make it out to be. Still, at least these properties are finally getting H’wood talent with some actual experience making (good) movies. As for me, though, I’d prefer David Fincher. But enjoy this fake DN one-sheet until then. http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/8793/pdnq.jpg
