Shenmue III A Possibility?
|Speaking at the Game Developer Conference earlier today, Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki said of the long unproduced third game in the series, “Of course I want to make it… Sega, I think, is going to let me make it… I think it is just up to the budget.” While Sega has reported that the original 2000 Dreamcast RPG cost $70 million to produce, Suzuki asserted that the original game had cost “only” $47 million to make.

In the mean time, if you’re hankering for a Shenmue-esque “Japan simulator”, you can always pick up Yakuza 3 for like $25. Yakuza 3 is to Japanophiles as Red Dead Redemption is to fans of westerns. If you’re a Japanophile, it is your game.
It’s funny to hear that Shenmue cost $47M… that’s really insane for a game of that era. It must’ve had a troubled production.
I’m guessing the extra dough went to marketing and/or that prototype on the Saturn. Kind of ironic that you’re bringing up Yakuza 3, though, as they scrubbed a lot of Japanese stuff in it without even any DLCs. Yakuza 4 should be the japanophile’s dream, though. As for Shenmue’s price, it was only slightly higher than that of FF7. But man, do I want me some Shen Mue 3, and am hoping, if it happens, they don’t make it an X-box exclusive like the last game.
Yeah, they did remove the hostess clubs, some sidequests and Shogi & Mahjong from Yakuza 3 inexplicably (while other Japanophile activities like Hanafuda remain in the game). That pissed me off for sure, but the remaining 97% of the game is there and it’s great. I’m looking forward to #4.
