Shout! Factory to Release Consensed Gaiking
|Shout! Factory has confirmed plans to release an “abridged version” of the 1976 44-episode Daiku Maryu Gaiking (Great Sky Dragon Gaiking) anime television series. The two-DVD “Gaiking: The Collection” set will be released on January 15, 2013. Shout Factory has not clarified any further details about the release.
From a retail description of the Shout Factory DVD set, not confirmed to have been provided by Shout Factory: “The classic ’70s Toei animated TV series has been transformed into three feature-length films that tell the story of the giant robot Gaiking, who must be used to stop the alien Zelaninvaders and their monster robots from destroying Earth.”
After word of domestic releases of Cutey Honey and Mazinger Z, this is a neat follow-up announcement, but if we’re only going to get dubbed-only compilation movies, thanks but no thanks.

It sounds to me like they may be releasing the condensed movies that partially aired on a pay-cable channel about 30 years ago. I would also not be surprised if we see the other series that met the same fate also become available later in the year.
The rights could be tied up with that alleged live-action remake from Paramount.
