Speed Racer Fares Poorly
|ICv2 reports that Warner Bros.’ new live action Speed Racer film earned only $20.2 during its opening weekend, far below even its scaled-down pre-premiere estimated gross of $30+ million. Reportedly the film’s reception overseas has been even worse, despite receiving an average “A-” Cinemascore score from viewers. An especially poor showing from Speed Racer may cause Hollywood’s studios to reconsider the viability of major American films based on anime licenses.

I hope that there won’t be anymore movies based on anime, Manga or Video Games as that the majority of them sucked BIG TIME. Beside, the idea of Hollywood movies based on anime or manga doesn’t excite me at all.
If you ask me, sanitizing out everything that makes it feel Japanese and then making the visuals look like something from the Spy Kids movies is a pretty surefire formula for ruining a classic anime.
Then again, one friend of mine saw it and liked it even more than Iron Man, and he REALLY liked Iron Man.
I dunno… The Matrix was a good movie based on Anime/Manga. I think as long as the movie is not “americanized” then it can be good if it’s based on Anime. Hollywood tends to butcher movies that are based on Anime. The Matrix was an exception, although, it wasn’t perfect of course….
Anyway, I would like to see more movies made based on Anime series as long as they are done well and deliver the same feeling and intensity that anime gives and they follow the style of the shows/movies, with the sexy clothing styles, wild hair styles, and over the top acting mixed with cartoon violence, and moments of deep seriousness etc…. hehe
