Steve Pearl Passes Away

Steve Pearl, one of America’s best known and most influential anime fans throughout the 1990s, passed away this past weekend. Pearl had been suffering from diabetes for a number of years. Steve was known by many as the moderator of the online rec.arts.anime.misc Usenet newsgroup from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s, and a co-founder of the Atlantic Anime Alliance, a social group of anime fans in the New York City area. In 1995 Gainax co-founder Toshio “Otaking” Okada named Pearl the “American Otaking.”
