Suffering Shield Hero?
|I’ve encountered a few references to “grammatical errors” in the published Shield Hero novels. If anyone can point out specific examples, preferably with page numbers, I’d be very grateful. I am one of the multiple editors for the English language translation of this book series. I’m also a professional grammar & writing college instructor, and I take my work seriously.
I can confirm that the original commercially published Japanese novels are not error free, so I’d really like to confirm whether I actually overlooked or allowed multiple errors in the English translation or if the “grammatical errors” are actually faithful representations of inconsistencies and contradictions present in the original Japanese text.
I just reviewed my final critiqued version of the first novel translation by allowing Microsoft Word’s grammar checker to skim through the document and stop at every questionable instance. Regrettably, I did find one typo. I found the sentence, “You spit on the people you have sword to protect” that contains the word “sword” instead of “sworn.” However, that was the one and only typo in the book I found.

I should mention I really have no writing or editing credentials, so I’m somewhat uncomfortable making such specific critiques and it’s also very possible that it’s simply my ignorance that causes me to see a mistake where there is none. Still, since you did ask, places in volume one where I’ve noticed what might be considered errors (excluding the one you’ve already mentioned):
Page 105
“So he was he showing me slaves that were well trained”
Not certain the “he” immediately after “So” should be there.
Page 215
“Itsuki look instantly annoyed to see us, but quickly recoverd his bearings”
Perhaps “looked” was intended rather than “look”?
Page 216
“There 4 of us, the summoned heroes.”
Not sure if this one could even be considered an error. Just seems slightly awkward.
Page 330
“He was going to yell at me!I shook my head”
This might just be a printing error, but it looked like there was no space between the two sentences.
Those were the instances I noticed, and I do hope it helps. Though, again, I’m not an expert of any sort, and if anything I viewed as a mistake was not, then I apologize immensely.
