The Again, Maybe Not
|After the TBS television network reported earlier this week that Japan’s Ethics Organization of Computer Software (EOCS) would institute a ban on the manufacture and sale of adult computer games depicting violence against women to take effect June 2, members of the EOCS have expressed bewilderment over the report. Takahiro Baba, EOCS board member and president of the game development studio Visual Arts, has stated that the TBS news report was a total surprise to the EOCS.
Hiroyuki Kanno, an EOCS board member and chairman of PC game studio Abel, published a blog entry confirming that the EOCS has a meeting scheduled for June 2 and will discuss possible new restrictions on game development. But the EOCS has not formally implemented a ban on rape-themed PC games. Kanno’s blog post was deleted shortly after it was published.

And people wonder why I’m getting more disturbed, week by week, as to what comes out of Japan.
I am getting more disturbed at how some persons fail to understand the meaning of fiction, and want to impose their “morality” ant all costs, no one is putting at gun at their heads so they play ero games that has rape, this is again another act against plain freedom, and again comes from western hypocrisy and moralists.
So those virtual girls are so bad screaming for help? What is the world coming to? So now we should be more concerned about fictional characters’ well being instead of going after the real rapers on the streets, should we go after a person that enjoys erotic manga with “young” looking fictional characters instead of going after real pedos abusing real children?
Seriously, what is the world coming to…
All law is an imposition of morality, and if you don’t believe fiction has an impact on the behaviors of those who consume it…
_I’m_ getting more and more disturbed as to the types of stuff coming out in Japan as the market becomes more “lowest common denominator”.
Maybe there’d be a few fewers “rapers (rapists) on the streets” if the (even just otaku) culture wasn’t so permissive to the concept.
“All law is an imposition of morality” It will always have subjective elements as is us humans that make law, but don’t tell me a law concerning homicide is an imposition of morality, there is something common sense ya know. Laws against REAL child porn anre welcomed and that is hardly an imposition of morality, it is common sense to protect defenseless children, but it is plain and stupid morality to try to ban something strictly subjective that disturbs only you and the people that share your closed minded ideology.
So you are saying fiction has an impact, hell yes it does, yet again i go back to common sense, by you standards it means we shoould ban then ANYTHING and Everything in fear someone ALREADY screwed up in the head will try to do something he saw in a novel, manga, comic, etc right? Lets do it, it will resolve the worlds problems, FICTIOn is EVIL.
Lets ban movies, since they lead to mass murderers, lets look at japan and all its violent people and countless pedophiles and all rapers over there… hey wait, isnt Jpana one of the most secure and pecful countires in the worl with real low criminal rates??? MMmmm, FICTION is Evil and rules or lives right…
Not to mention that issues like these don’t exist in a vacuum. Even if there was some irrefutable, quantifiable correlation between porn games that depict rape and an increase of real-life rape, giving the gov’t the ability to block the production and sale of those games chips away at civil liberties. The freedom of speech is no small deal in a liberal democracy… every expansion of gov’t power has to be weighed against that. I’m not arguing against the possibility that the sale of rape games lead to an increase of rapes, but you better be measurably saving thousands upon thousands of women (and not just like, one or two every year) from rape in order to have a strong argument for the ban of rape-themed porn games.
This all assumes that the EOCS is a gov’t organization. If it’s an industry self-regulatory body like the ESRB, then this would all be an internal industry battle that has nothing to do with the law. The industry will do whatever it needs to in order to:
1. continue making money
2. keep government regulation away
I suggest you take a look at other cultures (if not the differing results of criminal actions in this one) before you claim that even murder is not subject to morality.
There are certain moralities in which murder is, in fact, _encouraged_, not just allowed (honor killings, anyone??).
Just because their law is not with our morality does not make the fact that law is based on morality false.
The more I look at Japanese entertainment these days, the more I am getting awfully creeped out. And don’t think that things like gropers on the subway system are not a result of a lot of this content.
You cannot have freedom when the freedom does more harm than good. Look at the anime industry for good examples of that.
I see more and more where are you coming from form your posts.
Does any other cultures matter here? I am simply looking at the society I and the Japanese and many live in, I am not looking at other present or past cultures and their laws that have no relation with the matter at hand.
Now from your posts I will straight ask you starcade: WHAT do you have against Japanese anime and game industry in its adult and non adult divisions? This is like racism honestly, you speak so much of how you see “Japanese entertainment” but fail to address that what they offer we see it in other kinds of entertainment as well, so then, it is all againts just Japan?
Because what you imply, making look Japanese entertainment (whatever this includes for you) is pretty much a factory producing criminals, so then the same goes for any kind of entertainment no? why are you just citing and attacking Japanese, in this particular cases, adult games, manga, anime?
What is the difference of playing GTA and making me go cause some mayhem on the streets? What is the difference with a Rambo movie making me go kill in the streets? What is the difference with a US porn movie that depicts abusing a girl/raping her and making me go rape someone in the streets? What is the difference with reading Superman and making me go to a building and jump thinking I can fly? What is the difference with a western groping movies making me go to the subway and train to do some groping myself? What is the difference with a novel that depicts a forbidden relationship with an underage individual and motivating me to try do to the same by any means necessary?
So again, why plainly and clearly only attack in your perspective a decadent and indecent Japanese entertainment industry?
My hypothesis is that for a person like you the ideal world is that of censorship, prohibition, to ban anything and everything that can influence us negatively right?
Fortunately I and many were properly taught by our teachers and parents the difference between reality and fiction, but oh the lazy people, why bother when we can ban and prohibit right?
Sure I may watch some hot sex in a store’s dressing room in a hentai movie and think, hey, thats hot, I may try it some day but I see a groping themed movie and I know if I do that in real life it may get me in trouble and if so may get punished not by a law made by some moralist but because is something that is plainly wrong and I maybe doing something against and individual’s will.
“You cannot have freedom when the freedom does more harm than good”
Before we discuss that please show proof that there is a direct relation, this is plainly your subjective point of view with no concrete evidence to support your hypothesis. If what you say was true all of us would be pedophiles, murders, etc with all books, movies, games, music, and everything being potential triggers.
“Lets ban everything in the hope we have less murderers, pedophiles” you say, no thanks, now that would clearly be cutting everyone’s else freedom and that is a fact unlike your “You cannot have freedom when the freedom does more harm than good”, even if you manage to probe this hypothesis, you will need to still probe banning and prohibiting will actually have the desired effect in lowering criminal rates.
That it may have a negative influence in some individuals cannot be totally denied, but that person should already have those tendencies, again its not like you watch some killing in a movie, game or similar and will make you go out an kill right? Even if that is the case what you propose is plainly invading the freedom everyone else for the possible good or certain individuals.
So starcade you don’t like Japanese entertainment, don’t watch it, what are you doing here in this site then anyway?
Forgot to comment about “The more I look at Japanese entertainment these days, the more I am getting awfully creeped out. And don’t think that things like gropers on the subway system are not a result of a lot of this content.”
So you are getting more creeped out the more you look, yet you keep “looking” to keep saying oh god, today I am more creeped out than last week….interesting starcade, interesting…
if I am creeped out at something then I dont ever go near it, but you “keep looking” which means that even if you don’t totally involve with that stuff you keep looking to see something catches your interest, and by your words japanese entertainment may provoke a negative influence for everyone right, even yourself, so why do you keep looking? Interesting.
Why am I here?
To spite the leeches.
But the more I am here, the more I see that the influence that the leeches have (cheap animation, lowest common denominator bullshit) leads to more crap that, frankly, should be subject to review.
