Toonami to Air Casshern Sins & Deadman Wonderland
|Toonami has formally confirmed that it will begin airing the Casshern Sins & Deadman Wonderland anime TV series at 12:30am on Sunday, May 27.
Cartoon Network and Adult Swim Vice-President of Strategic Marketing and Promotions Jason DeMarco has informed the public that the resurrected Toonami will not air Naruto or Dragon Ball Z because, “The rights to those shows are owned by our competition or are out of our price range.” “Something you should know about THIS Toonami: We have very, very little $$. This experiment will need ratings success to receive more funding for new shows, more [mascot character] Tom animation, etc.”
DeMarco also clarified the Adult Swim’s May 16 press release which stated that Toonami is developing “new original anime programming.” The resurrected Toonami will feature new title acquisitions but will not have new titles developed specifically for broadcast.

CASSHERN SINS is really tough sledding if you’re looking for decent ratings. Audiences will go to sleep after the first twelve minutes, guaranteed.
As much as I’ve enjoyed Casshern Sins, I’m also surprised that one of Madhouse’s experimental seinen series landed some US television airplay. It’s not as obtuse as Kemonozume or Kaiba, but it does drive at a post-apocalypse, mono-no-aware to the max concept pretty hard that will be “too Japanese” for channel surfers & casual fans, I imagine.
Not sure why, myself, but there are probably some retro anime geeks who are involved with AS’s programming, because we wouldn’t have gotten Lupin and Gundam otherwise. Though, in some ways, it makes sense. The success of Transformers and even Real Steel suggests robots are still chic in American pop culture right now. Still, if I were running FUNi, I would’ve broadcast Birdy or Kenichi.
Saw the premiere episodes of both shows…
Why is so much recent anime so tough to slog through???? Arggghhh.
Slow, slow, slow.
When I was an anime newbie many years ago, it seemed like more of the shows and movies were easier to sit through and a LOT more interesting than most of the today’s fare.
FEW of those shows were as obtuse and slow as what’s airing now/being licensed for the US. It is tough to sift through and find classics now!
Darn big shame.
Glad I listened to the reviews for Casshern Sins and never bought the series in BD. Deadman Wonderland is also likely a pass, too.
I am so unimpressed with the relaunch of Toonami.
A better schedule COULD save the timeslots but I think it will be dead within 6 months with all the repeats and unimpressive series airing…
Repeat: I am NOT a huge Shonen Jump series fan NOR do I want to rewatch series that have re-aired non-stop for a decade or longer!!!!
It’s past time for newer shows and a miz of old-school classics.
Apparently, CN doesn’t understand those basic facts and can’t market non-domestic productions to save its own skin anymore…
A friend just recently introduced me to Deadman Wonderland, and while it takes a few episodes to set the stage and get going, once it does it just doesn’t let up. Having read the manga, which they’ve BARELY grazed the top of, it’s destined to get even better. Seriously, market the hell outta that, and it could be a big cash cow.
I’m not like a serial-anime fan, but given the typical stereotypes that most Americans especially have towards anime (meaning, most typical american teens think it’s weird unless they’re already into it) this show is pretty good at bridging that gap, I’d even say it’s a way to bring in new fans that otherwise wouldn’t even be privy to Toonami’s existence.
If people learned a little PATIENCE, THAT show would be a big plus for Toonami. Casshern Sins? Eh, it’s on after DW, I usually switch it off after that.
But seriously, you’re talking to someone who normally winces at the thought of anime conventions and badly written dialogue in japanese cartoons- and this show COMPLETELY changed my perspective. Keep it. You won’t regret it, you just have to give it a chance to take off first.
