Ulfuls Mascot to get an Anime

Composer Tomohisa Ishikawa, whose credits include composing the soundtracks for Kite Liberator and the Appleseed: Ex Machina movie, will direct next month’s Waimo-kun ~Kiiroi Kao Shite Babanban anime TV series. Waimo-kun is the mascot character of the rock band Ulfuls. Around 1989 Ulfuls vocalist Tortoise Matsumoto drew flyers advertising the band’s live performances. The flyers included a stylized character that shouted “Wai mo! Wai mo!” (Me too! Me too!) meaning “I’m going to the live concert too!” in the Kansai dialect. The character eventually adopted the name “Waimo-kun” and became the band’s mascot.

The series of short Waimo-kun anime episodes will air on the Music On! cable & satellite network beginning October 6.
