Lately? I think the practice of airing censored (steam, icons, total removal of footage) TV versions of nudity-filled anime, and withholding the uncensored material for the DVDs has been going on for years. For example, some of the Koi Koi Seven (from 2005, and not the oldest by a long shot) TV-source fansubs are actually several minutes shorter than their DVD counterparts, in addition to the girls being liberally treated with an airbrush in the scenes that are broadcast.
Agreed. Extended or uncensored home video episodes have been fairly routine in anime since at least Akihabara Denno Gumi and Weiss Kreuz did in back in 1998. My casual phrasing may be misleading, as I think it’s more accurate to say that with the concurrent DVD premiers of Strike Witches and Sekirei, there are simply two very high profile new uncensored DVD releases causing a stir in the Japanese fan community lately.
I was under the impression that the “trend” you spoke of, John, was for blog posts to start doing side-by-side comparisons of censored and uncensored screenshots from an anime’s TV and DVD releases.
That said, I’m intrigued by your mention that these two DVD releases are “causing a stir” in the Japanese fan community lately. Why is that? Are fans upset with how much the TV releases were censored, now that they have the DVDs to compare them to? Or are they objecting to the level of nudity in the DVD releases? Or is it something else entirely?
