US GameCube Sets Sales Records

While achieving less than anticipated launch day sales in Japan, Nintendo claims that the North American launch of the GameCube has been the most successful video game console launch ever with sales exceeding 500,000 units in the first week. The Playstation 2 sold 500,000 units in its first week of release but then did not ship additional consoles to retails for several weeks thereafter. Nintendo already has 125,000 more units on the way to retailer shelves right now.

Furthermore, without citing exact figures, Nintendo claims that Luigi’s Mansion has already claimed the title of fastest selling launch game ever, surpassing even the exceptional launch sales of Mario 64.
