Yamato Rebirth Chapter Trailers Released
|The official homepage for the Space Battleship Yamato: Rebirth Chapter (Uchuu Senkan Yamato: Fukkatsu-hen) anime movie has added a streaming teaser (upper button) and full trailer (lower button). The movie is a direct sequel to the 1983 Final Yamato movie, set 17 years later when former Yamato first mate Susumu Kodai has been promoted to ship captain. The movie will hit Japanese theaters on December 12th.
I have nothing but respect for the Yamato anime franchise, despite the disappointing Yamato 2520; however, the CG implementation, character design, and character detail in this new movie look really cheap and ugly to me. Hopefully strong writing will overcome weak visuals.

Compared to Gonzo and Bayformers, it looks friggin’ sweet to me. Though why is the black power sign their greeting? ^_- Anyway, I’d love to see this sucker get a U.S. release, but, like the recent Macross stuff and HG, I’m not sure if this won’t be another case of the Japanese company butting heads with an American licensor(in this case, Toei vs. Voyager) so they can try to force the American side to give up its rights to the property so the Japanese side can either charge more for the rights or cut out the middle man.
I have to wonder if there’s really a big enough audience in America for new Yamato anime to justify an American release. Starblazers may have some nostalgia appeal, but I’m not sure that anyone apart from aging Starblazers fans in America is interested in a new Yamato movie.
John: If they updated it like they did with Star Trek, they could sell it to a new audience.
They’ve already done the coding. All they need to do is change that wretched Region setting, perhaps to 0. Japan is already NTSC.
